  • Mr. Wickham had destroyed Mr. Cole’s business by stealing all of his customers.
  • The incident occurred in the waning hours of the night, when attendees are known to be “foxed” and prone to acts of recklessness.
  • Mr. Wickham’s body was found in the stables.
  • Mrs. Reynolds retired from her housekeeping duties at 5:30 a.m.
  • Constables were unable to locate Mr. Henry Crawford after the murder.
  • Mrs. Robert Ferrars (nee Lucy Steele) was heard to remark how Mr. Wickham could make a woman feel truly seen.
  • Mrs. Reynolds said she saw Mrs. Lucy Ferrars lingering near the staircase to the guest quarters when she turned in for the night.
  • Mrs. Lucy Ferrars said that she did not see anybody coming down the stairs between 5:25 a.m. and 5:45 a.m.

  • Only one bullet had been fired from Mr. Cole’s pistol.
  • The blade found near Mrs. Lucy Ferrars’s room had Mr. Crawford’s initials on it — H.C.
  • Mr. Cole said he brought the pistol to the gathering because he had a right to protect himself and his business.
  • Mrs. Reynolds said that Mr. Wickham’s wife was spotted to have danced twice with Mr. Crawford.
  • Mrs. Reynolds saw Mr. Wickham go to Mr. Crawford’s rooms at 5:25 a.m.
  • When magistrates tried to locate Mr. Cole after the murder, they discovered that he had disappeared.
  • Mr. Cole had publicly threatened to kill Mr. Wickham, as witnessed by Miss Elizabeth Eliot and Sir Walter Eliot.

  • Mrs. Lucy Ferrars was rumored by Mrs. Alicia Johnson to have claimed to have come to the ball with the intention of beginning a dalliance with Mr. Wickham.
  • Bloodstains were found in Mr. Crawford’s carriage.
  • The bullet taken from Mr. Wickham’s thigh matched the gun owned by Mr. Cole.
